Why a muscle won’t let go
You can press on a knot as hard as you want, and if your nervous system isn’t on board, it will not release. This is the part of bodywork people miss. A muscle doesn’t stay tight purely for mechanical reasons. It stays tight because the brain is still telling it to brace.
When you are under sustained stress, the sympathetic nervous system stays switched on. That’s the fight, flight, or freeze response. It’s built for short bursts of threat, not for months of deadlines, commutes, and screens. Held on too long, it keeps the muscles tense and primed, and that low-grade bracing turns into the chronic tightness and pain you feel. The opposite state, rest and digest, is where the body actually recovers. Most of the work is about helping you cross from one to the other.

How the release actually happens
Here is the process. The therapist sinks sustained pressure into a trigger point and holds it. Sometimes the tissue gives in seconds, sometimes it takes longer. The release isn’t about brute force. The muscle lets go because the nervous system stands down. The therapist feels the tissue soften, and you often feel the pain drop even though the pressure hasn’t changed. That is your brain finally sending the signal to relax.

What helps the nervous system stand down
- Rhythm. The work follows a steady hold-and-release cadence rather than constant grinding pressure. That rhythm itself is a signal to the nervous system that there’s no threat to brace against.
- Breath. Slow, steady breathing pulls the body toward the calmer, rest-and-digest state. When a spot is intense, breathing through it deliberately, sometimes with the therapist breathing along to set the pace, helps you ride the good hurt instead of tensing against it.
- Communication. There’s no background music, by design. Describing what you feel as the work goes does two things. It tells the therapist exactly how the tissue is responding, and staying in conversation keeps you present and calm rather than clenched and braced.
- Knowing what is happening. When the therapist notes that a trigger point has softened or a muscle has let go, that isn’t just narration. Understanding what your body is doing lowers the anxiety that keeps the system on alert in the first place.
Why this matters beyond the table
A nervous system that has been stuck in alert for years doesn’t reset in one session. But each time you make the shift from braced to calm on the table, you’re rehearsing it. Over a series of sessions, the body gets better at finding that calmer state on its own, which is part of why the relief lasts longer than the appointment. Can stress really cause physical pain?

Why doesn’t pressing harder release a tight muscle?

What is the difference between fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest?

Why no music during the session?
So you can describe what you feel as the work goes. That feedback guides the pressure, and staying in conversation also keeps you present and calm rather than braced.
Is this just a relaxation massage, then?
No. The calm is in service of the work, not the point of it. The pressure is firm and specific, aimed at releasing trigger points and adhesions. How many sessions does this take?
Most clients follow either a six- or twelve-session plan, set during the Discovery Session. Six works well for many people, clearing a defined pattern.
