I didn’t arrive at this work from the outside. I have run close to a dozen marathons and a couple of ultras, including a 200-miler. I know exactly what the back half of a long training block does to a body, because I have spent years managing it in my own.

That background matters for runners specifically, because running is the purest form of the problem this work addresses. It is forward motion, repeated tens of thousands of times, loading the same tracking muscle chains in the same direction with almost no lateral or rotational variety.

The body’s natural rightward asymmetric structural weight distribution gets driven hard with every single stride, and the muscle chains managing it overload far faster than they do in someone who sits all day.
Why runners build overcompensation fast
Every stride asks the same muscle chains to do the same job. One side manages the braking forces and weight transfer while the other generates the push-off, over and over. On varied trail terrain, the body gets some relief from the sameness. On flat roads and treadmills, mile after mile, it gets none.
So, the tension that builds during the run doesn’t fully clear during rest. Over a training cycle it hardens into trigger points and adhesions along the tracking chains, and the tissue loses its independent glide.

That accumulated pattern is what eventually shows up as the nagging hip, the tight IT band, or the calf that always cramps on the same side. The pain usually appears where the chain is most overloaded, not necessarily where the tissue restriction actually sits.

Most of these have a major muscular component. Overloaded tracking muscles and lost glide, pulling constantly on the joint or tendon. That component is what hands-on work addresses, by releasing the chain feeding the restriction.
Worth knowing on the IT band specifically, since it is the one runners ask about most: the IT band itself is not a muscle and it does not tighten the way it feels like it does. The tensor fasciae latae, the muscle at the front of your hip, is what tensions it. That is where the work goes.
An honest line, though. Several of these names describe actual inflammation or tissue damage, and those are medical diagnoses. Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, hip bursitis, a hamstring tear. If you have acute, sharp, or worsening pain, get it evaluated by a physician or podiatrist first.
What this work addresses is the underlying muscular tension and overcompensation around the area. Often the very thing that set the problem up and keeps it coming back. That sits inside a plan that includes proper medical care for any actual injury.
How it works for runners
It starts with a Discovery Session. An in-depth intake conversation about your training and history, a movement and gait assessment of how you load and transfer weight, and an on-table evaluation by hand to pinpoint where the overcompensation has settled.
