Is Your Muscle Pain a Sign of a Bigger Issue? Massage Assessments in Austin
At Iler Method®, we are dedicated to helping you manage and overcome muscle and joint pain without invasive procedures. However, sometimes, persistent pain can signal a more serious issue. This post discusses how our thorough assessments and the Universal Pattern of Compensation (UPC™) can help identify when further evaluation is needed, ensuring you can maintain your active lifestyle.
Identifying Serious Underlying Issues with the "UPC"
At Iler Method®, we pride ourselves on helping you avoid invasive medical procedures. However, there are times when muscle and joint pain do not resolve despite our best efforts with assessments and treatment. As the creator of the Iler Method® in Austin, TX, I, David Iler, along with my dedicated team, have committed our careers to helping active individuals like you manage and overcome muscle and joint pain. Since 2013, our unique approach has served the Austin community.
The Iler Method has a proven track record of using the Universal Pattern of Compensation (UPC™) to identify and effectively treat various conditions. UPC is based on the theory, supported by the success stories of thousands who have completed our program, that the body compensates for imbalances through predictable patterns. These patterns handle most of the body's workload and remain consistent regardless of injuries, spinal deformities, or whether you are left- or right-handed.
This method, developed through extensive client observation and muscle manipulation targeted and effective treatment that is pivotal in addressing muscle and joint pain and improving overall mobility for our clients.
Through thorough sports massage assessments, we determine the root cause of the pain and if we can help. However, persistent muscle and joint pain can sometimes indicate a more serious underlying issue that requires further attention. In such cases, we prioritize identifying these conditions early to ensure you receive the appropriate care for your health and well-being.
Comprehensive Discovery Session with Iler Method
Developed by assessing and treating thousands of clients, the Iler Method offers a structured approach to keep you injury-free and ready for your activities. This journey begins with a comprehensive Discovery Session that includes an intake interview, a moving assessment, and an on-table pain evaluation. This initial step helps identify specific issues and sets the stage for a tailored treatment plan. The Discovery Session is an ideal assessment tool to determine whether the problem is muscular, joint-related, or something else.
The meticulous nature of the Discovery Session provides additional clues that may indicate a more serious issue. The initial intake interview lets us gather detailed information about your history and symptoms.
The movement assessment, including a video of your walk, reveals how your torso, neck, and arms coordinate with your lower body.
This helps identify which side of your body acts as a "stabilizer" and which is the "power side" by observing how each foot lands and how your pelvis moves.
The on-table pain assessment then confirms or challenges these observations and helps determine the level of overcompensation in the UPC muscles. If the pain aligns with the muscles in overcompensation, it's likely something we can address; otherwise, it may indicate a need for further evaluation.
A Multiple Session Plan - Optimal Treatment
We offer a comprehensive multi-session program designed to provide sustained relief from chronic pain. This structured approach allows your body the necessary time to adapt and respond to the therapy, ensuring long-term improvements. The program includes up to 10 treatment sessions spread over 14 weeks, giving you the optimal framework for healing and progress.
During the initial Discovery Session, we gather valuable insights that lay the foundation for your personalized treatment plan. As the weeks progress, these insights deepen our understanding of your needs, allowing our therapists to continuously adjust and refine the treatment approach. This evolving comprehension is crucial for recognizing the areas that require sustained attention, particularly for those whose injuries have developed over months or even years.
Our iterative process underscores the importance of ongoing communication and adjustment throughout a 10-session program. By continuously monitoring your progress and making necessary modifications, we aim to provide a consistent and effective treatment regimen that addresses your unique needs and promotes lasting healing.
Our evaluation process addresses every aspect of muscle and mobility issues. The most substantial progress typically occurs in sessions 5 or 6, where significant pain relief and mobility improve. However, if this point does not observe notable improvement, it may indicate a more complex issue that requires further evaluation outside of the scope of practice of the Iler Method.
When to Seek Further Attention: Recognizing the Signs
Understanding when to seek additional help is crucial in managing your overall health and well-being. If your pain continues despite our comprehensive treatment plan, it may indicate that the condition requires further evaluation. Persistent discomfort can sometimes indicate conditions beyond the reach of sports massage therapy.
In such cases, we suggest consultations with experts such as orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, rheumatologists, highly qualified physical trainers, chiropractors, or therapists. Having been in Austin for over a decade, we know the professionals we refer to and trust their ability to provide more in-depth analysis and appropriate treatments for complex issues that our assessments indicate may be beyond our capacity to resolve fully.
Recognizing when to seek additional help is crucial to our commitment to your health and well-being. If your pain continues despite our comprehensive treatment plan, we will guide you to the appropriate professionals to ensure you receive the necessary care.
