For therapists. If you are a licensed massage therapist in Austin who wants to do focused, clinical work rather than one-off relaxation sessions and learn a structured method built around real pain patterns, the Iler Method® practice may be a place worth joining. This is not a weekend course. It is an invitation to work here and learn the method the way our therapists do, through hands-on training as part of the team.
By David Iler, LMT, CPT. Licensed massage therapist since 2004, certified personal trainer, and founder of Iler Method® massage therapy in Austin, Texas. Updated July 2026.
How the Iler Method came to be
I became a licensed massage therapist in 2004. Like a lot of therapists, I spent my first decade working proficiently with tight tissue, trigger points, and adhesions, one session at a time.
Moving to Austin from Southern California in 2013 changed my work. As a marathoner and ultra-marathoner, I fell in with the Austin running community, and to connect with people and grow the practice, I started offering free pain assessments at run clubs, exercise classes, and races around the city. Doing hundreds and then thousands of those assessments is where the pattern revealed itself, and where the Iler Method began to take shape.
What I noticed, across thousands of assessments
The same thing kept showing up. A consistent pattern of specific muscles that were reliably tighter on one side of the body than the other, regardless of someone’s injury history or spinal shape. That observation became the Universal Pattern of Compensation, the UPC, which is the backbone of the method. Our piece on muscle overcompensation explains that pattern.
The insight was that chronic pain is rarely just a local problem. It is the loud end of a whole-body compensation pattern that has been building for years. Once you can read that pattern, you work differently, following it to its source instead of chasing the spot that hurts. That is what the method teaches, and it is what our therapists learn to do.
Why therapists want to work this way
A few things make this different from a typical massage job, and they are the reasons therapists tell us they want to be here.
- Your body lasts. Traditional massage is hard on a therapist’s wrists, hands, and back, and a lot of good therapists burn out or get injured. The Iler Method’s manual approach is built around body mechanics that protect the therapist, so you can do this work for the long haul.
- The work is structured and clinical. Instead of one-off relaxation sessions, you work with people over a course of visits on a real pain pattern, and you see meaningful change. That is more satisfying work.
- You start with a strategy, not a guess. Rather than palpating around hoping to find the right spot, the method gives you a starting point and a map, so you work purposefully from the first minute.
- Sessions are focused. Targeted work on the pattern driving the pain, rather than spreading a full-body hour thin. Our piece on what makes the method different covers this.
- Clients are part of the work. The room is oil-free, quiet, and well-lit, so clients stay present and give real-time feedback. That makes the work more accurate and, honestly, more interesting to do.
How you would learn it
You do not need to know the Iler Method to join. You need to be a licensed massage therapist who is genuinely interested in this kind of clinical, pattern-based work, and willing to learn.
Therapists who join the practice learn the method here, through structured, hands-on training as part of onboarding, working alongside experienced Iler Method therapists. New team members start by reading the book, then build from there into the assessment and the hands-on method over a guided onboarding period. It is a real apprenticeship in the approach, not a weekend certificate, which is why our therapists are genuinely fluent in it.
Who we are looking for
The therapists who do well here tend to share a few things. A licensed massage therapist in good standing, curious about how the whole body compensates rather than just where it hurts, comfortable communicating with clients during the work rather than working in silence, and interested in doing this as a craft they keep getting better at. If that sounds like you, we would like to hear from you.
